  • Birdwatching
Over forty-one species of birds have been recorded in nearby Poulnasherry Bay. It is a designated SPA, an important ornithological site and an important breeding area for Brent Geese. Loop Head is very popular with birdwatchers from all over the world. This popularity is due to the range of seabirds that breed here each summer (including Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Guillemots, Razorbills, Puffins and Gannets), and in particular due to the autumn passage of an amazing array of seabirds and waders. The best months are August through October, when West and NW winds blow many of the passing seabirds close to shore, so allowing excellent viewing. Seabirds regularly seen here in good numbers include Manx and Sooty Shearwaters, Storm and Leaches Petrels, and Great, Pomarine and Arctic Skuas. Sightings of Little Stints, Curlew and the American Buff-breasted Sandpiper have been made, and there are many other rare species seen from time to time from local viewing points.

Querrin House

The Rookery Self Catering Accommodation

Querrin House

Querrin House offers the opportunity of pure escape from the vagaries of the world to one of the most beautiful and peaceful locations in Ireland. Warmly nestled in the most westerly mature deciduous wood in West Clare, sheltered from the Wild Atlantic weather, the manicured gardens of Querrin House sweep down to the shoreline of the River Shannon Estuary from a backdrop of our Walnut, Copper Beech, Tulip, Sweet Chestnut, Ash and Sycamore feature trees to present you with a truly magnificent open view of historic Scattery Island with its monastic Round Tower and the beautiful green fields of County Kerry just a couple of kilometres across the estuary.

Wake up in the morning in our warm cosy beds to the bird chatter of our Rookery as our rooks discuss world events and ponder out loud on the meaning of life. Observe from your bed all of our wide range of local song birds. Look carefully and you might see a wild Hare, fox or badger as they slip quietly through our farmyard. Hear the raucous call of our ravens and wild pheasant.
The Shannon estuary in front of the house
Change into your swimming cloths and walk down our front avenue to Querrin Pier for a generally private refreshing and bracing sea-water swim before coming back to your cosy accommodation for a hearty Irish breakfast cooked on your ever-welcoming farmhouse range. After breakfast, relax indoors in your sunroom with a good book or sit outside on your garden furniture to immerse yourself in the sounds, smells and visual delights of the very best of the West of Ireland’s flora and fauna.
The Shannon estuary
Why not stay closer to home and just explore our local shoreline. Gather some shellfish like peri winkles, cockles, barnacles or razorfish to enjoy with a nice bottle of wine or find a hide near to the shoreline to enjoy some close-up birdwatching of our resident and migrating seabirds; Or maybe you might like to do something more adventurous like to explore all the incredible offerings of the magnificent Loop Head peninsula and the Wild Atlantic Way.

For lunch, pick some organic salad leaves, vegetables, soft fruit, apples or pears (subject to season, weather and availability) in your hosts gardens. In The Rookery, the nature of your holiday is totally to your own liking. We your hosts would very much like to suggest that you come to our very private house in Querrin to escape, totally relax and just de-stress yourselves away from the madness and weariness of the world.

Walking & Cycling
Bring walking whoes and you can start your rambles from the door of Querrin House! The house is also located near the loophead cycleway which can be explored individually (bike hire in Kilkee)

Doonaha beach nearby

Swimming, Watersports
The pier is a great place to play on the sand or swim. The creek is tidal so for the young you should go to the beach at low water when they can swim, splash and play in shallow water. Swimming from the pier is quite safe as there is no undertow, just be aware that the tide forms a current as it flows and ebbs and do not try to fight it, look at the flow before you jump in and go with it. There is also a nice sandy beach at low water. Another fine safe beach is just a couple of minutes drive away in Doonaha (see the picture!) The Kilkee Diving And Watersports centre (diveireland.com) offers diving activities as well as deep sea angling, dolphin trips, sailing lessons and jet skiing. On offer are full organised dive tours, full rib and equipment hire. Surfing, Kayaking, Coasteering, Sailing courses for adults and kids are offered by nevsailwatersports.com

Fish for crabs from the pier! Sea angling trips can be arranged with local licensed operators carrying anglers to fish the abundantly rich coastal waters of the Atlantic and the Shannon Estuary - Cod, Ling, Hake, Haddock, Wrasse, Red Gurnet, Mackerel, Pollack, Conger, Tope and Shark.

A drive along the amazing coastal scenery between Kilkee and Loop Head Lighthouse is a must. The famous Cliffs of Moher are only 40 mins away; a little bit further to the North is Doolin (where boats are leaving to the Aran Islands) and the unique limestone area of the Burren, a heaven for walkers, climbers and botanists. Also recommended is a stroll through the shopping streets of Ennis with its medieval atmosphere, as well as visiting Bunratty Castle & Folk Park which features many traditional buildings from the area. Medieval dinners are also arranged there throughout the year.
